How to Properly Put on a Boutonnière

Boutonnières are a very special way to honor the significant men on your wedding day, but can cause the groom and bridal party a lot of anxiety about how to properly attach them. We have seen this issue arise on wedding days time and time again, but there is no need to stress.

If a wedding expert (bridal attendant, coordinator/planner, or florist) isn’t by your side to put them on, just follow our quick and easy 3 step guide below and they will all be properly pinned in no time!

STEP 1:

Place the boutonnière on the left lapel.

Holding the boutonnière correctly and at a slight angle place it on the left side. It should be placed on the top of the lapel and on the left side. If you’re pinning it on someone else, then it should be placed on the right of the tie. The boutonnière is placed lower than the tie, but just above the pocket square.

STEP 2:

Fold the lapel over the boutonniere.

While holding the flower in place, fold the jacket material over the flower allowing you to see the back of the lapel.

STEP 3:

Slide the needle downward into the back of the lapel.

At a downward angle, slide the pin running through both sides of the lapel. Be sure to stick the needle through the flower stem. The movement is a simple forward and back motion, going forward through the fabric and flower stem, then weaving it back in towards the back of the lapel.

After the boutonnière is securely placed, check and see that the needle is not visible from the front and that it’s very secure. You can always use two pins for more stability.
